Winegrowers
with a big heart
Our history
Although the existence of this marvellous liqueur seems to have always existed, it wasn’t until 1955 that the first discussions took place with the aim of creating a wine-making and sales cooperative.
Vinification began at Château de la Devèze, then at the Muscat de Lunel cooperative cave, which was founded in 1959 with nine associated producers.
The Protected Designation of Origin was registered in 1973.
This PDO, managed by an exceptional cellar master, is now distributed throughout France and exported to Belgium and Italy.

Authentic values
Produced from the “Muscat à petits grains” grape variety, MUSCAT DE LUNEL natural sweet wine is made with passion and skill by the winegrowers and qualified staff of the Cave Coopérative du Muscat de Lunel.
This naturally sweet wine is a perfect harmony of citrus and rich, ripe fruit that dances on the palate, leaving a sweet, lingering imprint.
Muscat de Lunel has always been highly prized, combining the sweetness of honey with the warmth of the sun in the south of France, and all the love that its creators were willing to give it in order to make it even greater: while it can be said that Pauline Borghese sent Muscat de Lunel to her brother Napoleon I during his exile, legend has it that the deposed emperor drank it to warm his heart !
Since 1841, the history of Muscat de Lunel has been linked to that of François Sabatier d’Espeyran and his estate at Tour de Farges, where he lived at the time. Thanks to his efforts, he succeeded in creating a Muscat of rare quality, imbued with the soul and history of his family.
His wine became famous far beyond the borders of Lunel, carrying with it the memories of the past and the promise of a bright future for generations to come.
And so the history of Muscat de Lunel continued to be written, blending the past with the present, tradition with innovation, in an eternal hymn to the beauty and magic of the sun and the vine.
When we know how to taste wine, bread and friendship, we learn how to savour every moment of our lives, respecting the passing of time. Because wine is culture, wine is civilisation, and a thousand years old at that.
Jean CLAVEL – Preface Alain LABORIEUX « MUSCATS ».

Grape varieties, vinification
and ageing
Muscat de Lunel is a naturally sweet wine made from the Muscat à petits grains B grape variety alone. It performs best on poor, stony, clay-dominated slopes.
It is an early grape variety, harvested in Roussillon between 1st August and early September. It is a highly aromatic variety, which can be used to make Muscat Sec.

The harvesting of the grapes, the vinification, the production and ageing of the wines and the packaging of the wines that may be entitled to use the terms “Muscat de Lunel” and “Muscat de Noël” are carried out exclusively from the vines located in the production parcel area within the territory of the following communes in the Hérault department: Lunel, Lunel-Viel, Saturargues and Vérargues.
